The original grass field was used heavily and therefore difficult to maintain with no irrigation in dry weather and no drainage tile to handle standing water in wet weather. The University turned to installing synthetic turf on the north half of the field, with new drainage under the entire field, irrigation and new turf system on the south half of the field. The project includes new backstops for softball, a new support facility with restrooms and storage, new parking configurations and vehicular ingress/egress. Pedestrian and bike connectivity from the field to the rest of the campus was also addressed.

The decorative synthetic turf in the outfield features Miami’s signature block ‘M’ design.
